Visit Korea Committee (VKC, Chairman Park Sam-koo) is to organize 'Korea Grand Sale', an annual shopping and cultural tourism festival targeting foreigners to promote foreign tourists' visit and increase consumption expenditure in winter, from January 18 (Thu) until February 28 (Wed), 2018.

 

The Korea Grand Sale in 2018 will have 'Special Winter Festival' as a concept focusing on connection with PyeongChang Winter Olympics promotion of Korea's representative cultural tourism contents increased participation of small and mid-sized business owners. During the event, the festival offers various experiences and entertainments with the themes of winter sports, night life in Korea, K-culture, K-food', etc. It will provide winter sports experiences at ski resorts, ice rinks and indoor snow parks and encourage a broad participation of small and mid-sized businesses such as Jjimjilbang (Korean spa and sauna) · Noraebang (Korean karaoke) · performance venues · clubs · bars · cafes and famous local restaurants to actively promote the culture that can be enjoyed only in Korea and offer benefits to foreign visitors.

 

'Tourist Service Center', run by VKC, will visit local festivals and tourist attractions mainly in Olympic sites in Gangwon Province in rotation and provide interpretation and other convenient services. VKC also plans to offer free online marketing training for small and mid-sized business owners to support their participation in the event with 'Google Korea', VKC's member company.

 

The industries are already coming up with the benefits that could draw foreigners' attention. In the airline industry, Jeju Air and Air Seoul are offering a maximum of 95% and 92% discount, respectively, on all international flights inbound to Korea. Jeju Airline, in particular, is giving away a transportation card with the picture of DBSK, a popular Korean hallyu boy band, printed on it by drawing the winners among the customers who purchased flight tickets.

 

Lotte Hotel is to offer a voucher card for Lotte Duty Free Shop worth KRW40,000 to foreigners who booked more than 2 nights on its website and Lotte Duty Free Shop will provide gifts even to customers who made a one-dollar purchase and discounts depending on the amount of purchase. Doota Duty Free Shop will give discount coupons worth KRW110,000 in total depending on purchase amount. Korea Smart Card is to offer a KRW3,000 discount on Mpass, a durational public transportation pass exclusive for foreigners.

The cosmetic industry is also to present benefits to attract foreign customers. Jayjun Cosmetic will give away one free mask pack for those who purchase two mask packs and Isoi is to offer a KRW10,000 worth of hand cream as a free gift upon a purchase of over KRW100,000. In the culture and entertainment industry, Grevin Seoul Museum, Trickeye Museum and Alive Museum are to provide a discount of approximately 20% each on their admission fees.

 

VKC also plans to actively promote KOREA TOUR CARD, the foreigner-exclusive transportation and tourism card which has been hugely popular since its launch in January, during the Korea Grand Sale period and offer convenient services to FIT(Foreign Independent Travelers) such as a maximum of 50% discount on 'Hands Free Service' (luggage delivery service between hotels and airports and luggage storage service at major bases) fees.

 

Secretary General Han Kyung-Ah of VKC says, "The event in 2018 is a good opportunity for foreigners not just to enjoy shopping but also to experience diverse sides of Korea including sports, tourism and cultural experience as the event period overlaps with the period of 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Korea Grand Sale has continued to grow so far, and we will develop it further into a representative shopping and cultural tourism festival not just in Korea but also in Asia by improving its quality to match its growth in size."

 

VKC will also organize active overseas promotion to advertize Korea Grand Sale to the world including Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, India and the UK. VKC plans to actively expand its PR marketing through the overseas networks of airlines, duty free shops, department stores, global card companies and Korea Tourism Organization to actively attract foreign visitors.
